Day by day program outline
In the morning arrival at your accommodation. During the afternoon join Gaveena's local folks for a stroll in the heart of Cagliari, discovering the highest and oldest part at Castello as well as the area surrounding the docks at Marina. Narrow cobble streets, astonishing panoramic terraces, antique architectures and cozy corners are the background of the daily life in our Capital city. During many centuries, people and cultures coming from all around Mediterranean lived here and each of them have left its marks, creating a unique and intriguing atmosphere.
This fancy mixture is best represented by the amazing variety of typical food available almost at every corner; we'll get to dive into this precious heritage by visiting an iconic shop where authentic sardinian products made following ancient rituals are ready to be tasted by curious food explorers (duration 3 hours). Overnight.
South Sardinia offers a good climate for vine growing and several indigenous grape varieties such as Cannonau, Bovale, Carignano, Monica, Nuragus, Vermentino, Nasco, Vernaccia, Moscato, and Malvasia that have been produced here for centuries. Your local mates will open the doors of a wine cellar in the outskirts of Cagliari, where you will get deep into wine history surely an important part of sardinian identity. While enjoying generous sips of Bacchus favorite nectar, some bites of cheese, ham and other delightful stuff will tickle your taste… and your thirst! (duration 3 hours). Overnight.
The day starts with a walk in Villanova, the 'new village' built in 13th century by the farmers gathering from countryside to sell products to the inhabitants of Cagliari. The recent restoration has given a new life to this area where to chase handicraft shops, artist studios and get into the friendly atmosphere of tiny bakeries, greengrocers and cosy food stores. But the coolest place in Villanova is San Benedetto, probably the largest indoor market in Europe: get ready for a symphony of intense colors, seductive smells and lots of chatty fellows who will pull you into the food heaven! While wandering between the stalls, you'll be offered several bites together with sincere smiles, so collect as many as you can, close your eyes and get pampered by tastes.
But another surprise is waiting for you: sardinian craft beer. People living in our island are terribly fond of beer, that's why in recent years many micro-breweries started a high quality production appreciated all around Europe. The first brew-pub in Sardinia will welcome your thirsty soul and invite you to discover this curious side of our island… as usual together with some healthy bites (duration 4 hours). Overnight.
